Yamdrok Lake
Yamdrok Lake, also known as Yamdrok Tso, "Jade Lake" or "Swan Pond", is one of the three great sacred lakes of Tibet.
Location and Geography
Located on the southern bank of the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Nagarzê County, Yamdrok Lake is located at an altitude of 4,441 meters above sea level. With an east-west length of 130 kilometers and a north-south width of 70 kilometers, the lake's coastline extends for 250 kilometers, with a total area of 638 square kilometers, approximately 70 times the size of West Lake in Hangzhou. The water depth of the lake varies between 20 and 40 meters, reaching 60 meters at its deepest point.
The shape of Yamdrok Lake is irregular, with numerous branches and sinuous shorelines, as well as three adjacent smaller lakes, such as Nam Lake, Chem Lake and Jiucuo Lake. It was formerly a drainage lake, with water flowing into the Yarlung Tsangpo River via the Mocuo River, but it subsequently shrank to become an internal catchment lake, divided into several smaller lakes, with a difference in height at the surface of water no more than 6.5 meters.
Attractions of Yamdrok Lake
The mountainous terrain within the lake is rugged, with 21 islands scattered around the lake, each with its own independent water surface. The largest can accommodate five or six families, while the smallest are only a few hundred square meters. The largest island has an area of approximately 18 square kilometers, with lush grasslands and flocks of wild birds. The scenery of Lake Yamdrok is exceptionally magnificent and beautiful, with a breathtaking spectacle. The view of Lake Yamdrok with the sunlight glistening on the distant mountains and the glow of the lake water in the foreground is truly breathtaking. From the coast, you can see how Lake Yamdrok, surrounded by mountains, resembles a green jewel embedded in nature.
The water of Lake Yamdrok is crystal clear and the shoreline is covered with lush grass, making it a thriving grassland on the plateau. Here, you can experience the beautiful harmony between man and nature. In winter, Yamdrok Lake freezes, like a beautiful lady lying in the arms of the Himalayan mountains. In late spring and early summer, you can see shepherds driving livestock to the dozens of small islands in the lake, where they can graze peacefully. In summer, the lake shore is full of pastures, making it the ideal season for shepherds to herd cattle and sheep. In early winter, both people and livestock return to the lake shore, creating a beautiful picture. In addition, Lake Yamdrok is a naturally rich "fish reservoir", where you can fish almost with your hands and enjoy tasty Tibetan crucian carp. Around Lake Yamdrok and on the islands of the lake, there are also many species of wildlife, such as wild boar, mountain sheep and foxes.
