Hong Kong Stanley

Stanley, or Chek Chue, is a coastal town and a popular tourist attraction in Hong Kong. It is east of Repulse Bay and west of Shek O, next to Chung Hom Kok and Tai Tam. It is said that in the center of the village there was a large red ceiba tree that was covered in red flowers during its bloom. Hence the Chinese name of the village was Red Pillar until the 19th century, when the British, in honor of Lord Stanley, changed the name.

Things to Do at Stanley

This former fishing village played an important role in the history of Hong Kong, previously serving as the administrative center of the British government before moving to Victoria City, the current central district.

Experience Old Hong Kong’s Lifestyle

The picturesque seaside town, with its sandy beach, attractive daily market and popular seaside restaurants and bars, owes its name to Lord Stanley, British Secretary at the time of the handover of the territory in 1841. The Old Stanley Police Station, Stanley Post Office and Stanley Military Cemetery, as well as the elegant monuments of Murray House and Blake Pier, both relocated from Central, offer eye-catching photo opportunities and timeless memories of old Hong Kong.

Shop Interesting Objects

Take your time to explore the maze of tempting shops and stalls at the daily market, selling a wide variety of items, from jewellery and affordable clothing to toys, souvenirs and even paintings by local artists. Check out the vibrantly printed tableware, including plates, bowls and teapots, available in a wide range of colors and motifs, and often discounted.

Explore Murray House

The iconic Murray House, located on Stanley's seafront, stands out for its historic architecture and what appear to be Roman columns that greet visitors at its entrance. Built in 1846, Murray House is one of the oldest Western-style buildings in Hong Kong. The building was originally situated in Central and was used as government offices and British Army barracks. It was dismantled in 1982 and reassembled in its new home in 2000. Today, visitors flock to this Victorian-era building for its shops and to dine at the German and seafood restaurants that now occupy the space.

Stroll Along Stanley Main Street

For entertainment, take a relaxing stroll while enjoying ocean views along Stanley Main Street, a popular shopping and dining destination right on the waterfront. Stanley's collection of restaurants and bars with tables overlooking Stanley Bay are especially popular with locals and visitors. They offer typical pub fare such as fish and chips, burgers and steaks, and drinks such as craft beers, wines and spirits.
