Where is Shaolin Temple

Shaolin Temple, also known as Shaolin Monastery, is located on Mount Song, near Dengfeng, Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China. This temple and its famous Pagoda Forest were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 as part of the "Historical Monuments of Dengfeng".

How to get to Shaolin Temple from Luoyang

The distance between The Shaolin Temple and Luoyang is about 80 kilometers, and there are express buses and coaches from Luoyang City to the temple. However, language could be a problem for you can’t expect comprehensive English service in Luoyang.

Another option is to take a coach that goes to Xuanchang and passes by the entrance of the Shaolin Temple. You can ask the driver to drop you at the temple entrance. This trip also takes approximately 2 hours.

From Dengfeng

If you are already in Dengfeng, the Shaolin Temple can be reached by taking buses No. 1, 2, 3, 6 or 8.

  • Travel time to Dengfeng: It takes about 20 minutes to travel from Dengfeng City to Shaolin Temple.
  • Duration of the visit: A tour inside the Shaolin Temple takes at least 2 hours. Highlights of the area include the Shaolin Kungfu demonstration (about 30 minutes), the temples (about 1 hour), and the Pagoda Forest (about 30 minutes). They are not connected to each other, so if walking is tiring, you can take a minibus.
