How to get from Datong to Pingyao Ancient Town

Pingyao is located in the heart of Shaanxi province, China. Distant approximately 715 kilometers southwest of Beijing, about 80 kilometers from the provincial capital, Taiyuan, and about 381 kilometers from Datong. There is no direct bus route from Datong to Pingyao. If you prefer to travel by bus, the option is to arrive in Taiyuan first and then take another bus to Pingyao.

To get to Pingyao Ancient Town from Datong, there are two recommended options:

By train

From Datong Station, there are four daily trains to Pingyao. The ticket cost is 61 CNY and the journey takes between 7 and 8 hours, depending on the train. It is suggested to opt for a night train to maximize travel time. Below you can check the train schedule from Datong to Pingyao.

Upon arrival at Pingyao Train Station, you can walk to the ancient city (about 1-2 km) or take a tuk tuk, the cost of which is ¥5-10. Please note that tuk tuk drivers may try to get a commission for taking you to a hotel.

Car rental (Not suggested)

Another option is to rent a car, which is more convenient and saves time. This way, you can make a stop at the Qiao Courtyard, located 20 km north of Pingyao. The direct trip from Datong to Pingyao takes about 4 hours, not counting the time spent visiting the Qiao Courtyard.
