Prepare Your Suitcase for Traveling to China

With the rapid development of society and economy, more and more people are drawn to visit China during their free time to enjoy its beautiful scenery and rich culture. However, packing for an unfamiliar country can be challenging. To help ensure a pleasant trip, here are some practical tips on what to pack and how to organize your luggage.

What to Pack?

Important Documents

Do not forget your passport (with a valid visa), boarding pass, credit card, travel itinerary, contact information, power adapter, and cash in Chinese currency. For added security, it is wise to make copies of important documents.

Clothing and Shoes

Choose your clothing according to the season of your trip. In China, spring and autumn are relatively short, usually lasting only three to four weeks, so the year is largely divided into summer and winter.

  • Summer: Lightweight and breathable clothing such as cotton T-shirts or shirts is recommended. In regions like Yunnan, however, temperatures can vary significantly between day and night, so it's a good idea to bring some warm layers.
  • Winter: In the south, a light coat may be enough, but in northern areas (including Beijing) and high-altitude regions, you will need a thick, windproof coat, a warm sweater, gloves, and a hat that covers your ears.

While clothing in China is generally affordable, it may be difficult to find sizes that fit well, especially if you require larger sizes. For example, a size S-M in Chile might correspond to XL in China. Similarly, large shoe sizes can be hard to find, so if you have shoes or boots that fit comfortably, it is advisable to bring them along.

Daily Use Items

Essential personal hygiene items include a toothbrush, toothpaste, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Items like shampoo and body wash can be purchased at local supermarkets during your trip, as most hotels also provide them.

Electrical Adapter and Charger

China uses 220V voltage and 50Hz frequency. The common plug types are A, C, and I. Make sure to bring a suitable adapter for your electronic devices.

  • Type A: Used in China, North and Central America, and Japan. Compatible only with type A sockets.
  • Type C: The European standard plug, also compatible with types E and F.
  • Type I: Common in Australia, New Zealand, China, and Argentina. Compatible only with type I sockets.

All chargers should be carried in your hand luggage. Be sure to fully charge your electronic devices before your trip and organize charging cables neatly.

Medications

If you are undergoing medical treatment, bring enough necessary medication for your entire journey, as some medicines may not be readily available in China. While international pharmacies offer a wider selection, a prescription from a Chinese doctor may be required.

Note that some medications, such as those containing cannabis, may be illegal in China. Consult your doctor in advance about alternatives. Common medicines like bandages, cold medicine, or anti-diarrheal tablets are easy to find, and your travel guide can help you purchase them if needed.

How to Pack Your Suitcase

To make the most of your luggage space and keep items organized, try the following methods:

  • Rolling Method: Saves space and reduces wrinkles. Suitable for coats, jackets, T-shirts, shirts, and skirts. Roll clothes tightly and place them at the bottom of the suitcase.
  • Tying Method: Ideal for large or wheeled suitcases. Place underwear in the center, roll T-shirts from the sleeves toward the body, then add pants, shirts, and jackets.
  • Organization Method: Use storage boxes or create custom compartments. Place shoes at the bottom to separate dirty or wet items. Store liquids and toiletries in external pockets. Compression bags can reduce the volume of bulky items like down coats or sleeping bags. Use small bags or boxes for accessories like jewelry, coins, or earphones.

Final Tips

Typically, a suitcase and a backpack are sufficient. If traveling in winter, you may need a larger backpack for extra clothing. Reducing unnecessary items will make your trip more comfortable.

Wear appropriate clothing based on the season and region. In northern China from November to March, you will need down coats, gloves, sweaters, and sturdy shoes. Even in southern areas like Hong Kong, warm clothing is necessary during this period. In summer, light and loose-fitting clothes are suitable.

Don't forget comfortable shoes, a portable power bank, personal hygiene products, and common medications. With careful preparation, you'll be ready for a wonderful journey in China.
