Morning: Humble Administrator's Garden & Tiger Hill
Begin your Suzhou exploration at the Humble Administrator's Garden. As one of China's Four Great Classical Gardens, it represents the pinnacle of Jiangnan garden design with its intricate layout, elegant pavilions, and the philosophy of a changing view with every step. Allow 2-3 hours.
Then, visit Tiger Hill, known as the "First Scenic Spot in Wu". See the ancient Yunyan Pagoda (China's "Leaning Tower") and historic sites like the Sword Pond and Thousand Men Rock, while enjoying panoramic city views from the hilltop.
Afternoon: A Slower Pace on Water or Alleys
In the afternoon, choose one of two classic ways to experience old Suzhou:
Grand Canal Cruise: Glide along the Ancient Canal to see waterside houses and ancient bridges from a unique perspective.
Rickshaw Ride Through Alleys: Explore historic districts like Pingjiang Road or Shantang Street by rickshaw, discovering local life and artisan shops among cobblestone paths and white-walled houses.
Evening: Free Exploration
Enjoy dinner at Shantang Street or Guanqian Street and admire the illuminated ancient townscape to conclude your first day.
Full Day: Tongli Ancient Town
Spend a full day immersed in the tranquility of Tongli Ancient Town. Surrounded by lakes, this town is a perfect example of "small bridges, flowing water, and households."
Walk across the Three Bridges (Taiping, Jili, Changqing) to partake in the local blessing custom.
Visit the exquisite Tui Si Garden, a compact "Garden of Retreat and Reflection" built along the water's edge.
Stroll through the extremely narrow Chuanxin Lane.
