The Wu Gorge, with its 45 kilometers of winding course, is celebrated as the most elegant and mystical of the Three Gorges. Its limestone walls rise amid perpetual mists, creating a gallery of twelve legendary peaks where each curve reveals a new silhouette.
Goddess Peak is its immortal soul. According to legend, the daughter of the Western King descended from heaven to help Yu the Great tame the floods, and her petrified form still awaits the arrival of King Chu in her dreams. Since then, she has watched over the river shrouded in clouds that poets called “morning clouds, evening rains.”
In autumn, the slopes of the gorge burn crimson. More than 120,000 hectares of maple leaves dye the cliffs, while boats glide over a mirror of red and gold. It is the most sought-after postcard image for photographers from all over the world.
Here, the river traces its most famous curve, a 90-degree turn that for years was featured on Chinese banknotes. Six of the twelve peaks are visible from the boats; the other six, according to legend, are only revealed to pure hearts who know how to look through the mist.
