Why visit here?
Visit Ganden Sumtsenling, the “Little Potala.” Admire its golden roofs, mirror lake, and authentic Tibetan monastic life.
Ganden Sumtsenling Monastery, known as the Little Potala, is the largest and most iconic Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan. Founded in 1679 by the fifth Dalai Lama, it stands on a hill facing the sacred Lake Naparu, creating a majestic silhouette reminiscent of the Dalai Lama's residence in Lhasa.
Its architecture combines Tibetan and Han Chinese styles. The golden roofs of its three main temples shine under the plateau sun, while the white and red stepped walls descend the hillside. Eight khangtsen, traditional monastic residences, surround the central enclosure, forming a labyrinth of sacred alleys.
Inside, huge wooden pillars wrapped in silk support assembly halls where hundreds of monks chant sutras at dawn. Centuries-old thangkas and sand mandalas guard the essence of Gelug philosophy, the school of yellow virtues.
At dusk, butter lamps illuminate the faces of novices debating doctrines in the courtyards. From the lake's viewpoint, the entire monastery is mirrored in the still waters where sacred ducks trace circles of absolute serenity.
Pros & Cons
- "Little Potala Palace" with authentic living Buddhism, not a museum
- Three-century murals painted with crushed minerals, still vibrantly alive
- Strict photography ban inside halls
