Why visit here?
Discover China's first national park. Crystal clear lakes, virgin forests, and Himalayan cranes. The natural soul of eastern Tibet.
Potatso National Park, established in 2007, is China's first national park. Located in Shangri-La, it is part of the Three Parallel Rivers region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its name, Potatso, comes from Tibetan and means “helping across the lake”.
Shudu Lake is its most accessible gem. A 3-kilometer wooden walkway runs along its shores, where centuries-old fir trees are reflected in crystal-clear waters. The silence is broken only by the call of the cuckoo and the murmur of the wind among the conifers.
Bita Hai, the sacred lake, lies deeper in the primary forest. Its depths are home to a unique species of fish, and every spring rhododendrons fall onto the surface, intoxicating the fish in a phenomenon known as “flower-drunk fish”.
The alpine meadows of Shudu are dressed in yellow in autumn. There, long-haired yaks and black-necked cranes, sacred birds of the Himalayas that migrate every winter, graze. Boardwalks allow visitors to walk over the wetlands without damaging this fragile high-mountain ecosystem.
Pros & Cons
- China's first national park, a UNESCO geopark of pristine plateau ecosystems
- Effortless immersion in 3,500m wilderness without technical hiking
- Altitude is 3,500-4,150m, but vegetation density means 80% of visitors feel zero symptoms
- Pro photography hack: inbound bus sit RIGHT, outbound LEFT – valley views and mountain lake glimpses appear exclusively on these sides. Miss it, see only road cuttings. Also: Militang-Bita transfer offers an unmarked mountain pass viewpoint—ask driver to pause, it's the single best Bita panorama
