Why visit here?
Explore Lijiang Ancient City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Canals, bridges, and Naxi culture come alive in every alleyway. The heart of the ancient Tea Road awaits you.
Lijiang Ancient City was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997, is a labyrinth of cobbled streets crossed by crystal-clear water channels from the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Its urban layout, without walls, follows the philosophy of harmony between man and nature characteristic of the Naxi ethnic group.
Sifang Square is the vibrant heart of the ancient city, the starting point of the historic Tea and Horse Road that connected Yunnan with Tibet. Its wooden buildings with gray roofs now house cozy cafes, silver workshops, and traditional art galleries.
Naxi culture survives in every corner. The elderly still wear their traditional sheepskin costumes and practice Dongba writing, the only pictogram system still in use in the world. The Dongba Institute allows visitors to learn about this fascinating legacy.
At dusk, thousands of red lanterns are lit, reflecting in the canals. The city then takes on an intimate and magical air, ideal for wandering leisurely among centuries-old bridges and discovering the soundtrack of water flowing beneath each window.
