Why visit here?
Climb the world's southernmost glacier. Jade peaks, Naxi culture, and Zhang Yimou's spectacular show. A sacred and unforgettable summit.
The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is the southernmost mountain range in Eurasia with perpetual glaciers. Its twelve peaks, covered in snow all year round, form a jade dragon that guards the horizon of Lijiang. Shanzidou Peak, at 5,596 meters, is the highest summit and has never been conquered.
The glacier cable car ascends to 4,680 meters, the highest altitude reachable on a tourist circuit in China. From there, visitors walk on ancient snow with views of the clouds floating far below. The thin air and white silence create an almost mystical experience.
At its feet, the Blue Lake Valley and White Cloud Meadow offer a contrast of colors. Its turquoise waters, fed by melting snow, reflect the snow-capped peaks. Small herds of yaks graze alongside Tibetan prayer flags fluttering in the wind.
For the Naxi people, the mountain is the abode of the god Sando. Every year, the elders perform ceremonies in his honor. At sunset, the show Impressions of Lijiang, directed by Zhang Yimou, brings together five hundred locals who sing and dance with the sacred mountain as an immense and eternal backdrop.
Pros & Cons
- Glacier Park (4,680m) offers the closest encounter with permanent snow in the Northern Hemisphere's southernmost glacier
- Blue Moon Valley delivers Jiuzhaigou-style turquoise water against snow peaks with zero altitude strain
- Living Naxi culture embedded in the landscape: the mountain is sacred as Sanduo, the Naxi protector god; the open-air Impression Lijiang show uses 500 local performers against the actual snow peak stage, depicting Tea Horse Road legends and mountain worship rituals
- Glacier Park cable car tickets require booking 3 - 7 days in advance. Contact us to book a tour and let us secure your tickets
- Oxygen costs 25 RMB in Lijiang Ancient City versus 100 RMB at the mountain. Buy 1-2 cans per person beforehand if needed.
- Not suitable for travelers with heart conditions, high blood pressure, or respiratory issues
